MIAMI — The Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro turned heads in the Miami Design District when he declared the naming of a new nuclear-powered submarine – the U.S.S. Miami – with none other than local luminary Gloria Estefan pegged as the ship's sponsor. The splashy announcement, part of the fleet week festivities, was included in a gala celebration at Jungle Plaza, where the military brass mixed with Miami high society.

The fleet week shindig, reported by WSVN, saw Estefan express her excitement, "Oh my God. This is such an honor because it’s a sub,” she gushed, setting off cheers as the high-profile entertainer embraced her new role in naval traditions. Revelers and service members were treated to a concert where Miami's musical talents, celebrating the armed forces, carried the night away.

Alongside Estefan at the momentous occasion, her husband Emilio also took part in what CBS News Miami described as an official kickoff concert that saw the likes the legendary reggae outfit "The Wailers," adding some irie vibes to the naval fanfare.

Fleet Week, a stalwart spectacle traditionally held up the coast, made its port of call in Miami this year, a move previously announced by Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Del Toro, cementing the city's maritime festivities from May 7 to May 13 – a week-long showcase of military prowess over the sea and beneath it. "A week of showing the capabilities of the maritime forces," Lance Corporal Alexander Peterson told CBS News Miami, his sentiment echoed by thousands of sailors, marines, and Coast Guardsmen descending on the city to bask in the sun, interact with the public, and yes, engage in a bit of boastful exhibiting of their impressive vessels and technology.
