Dallas is gearing up to officially welcome a new public art installment titled "Harmony" into Everglade Park, with a dedication ceremony scheduled for the morning of May 18. The sculpture, conceptualized and created by artist Laura Abrams, aims to encapsulate growth, nature, and community spirit, according to the City of Dallas.
The public is invited to come to see the artwork, which has been gracing the park since November last year. John D. Jenkins, Director of the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, expressed excitement over the new addition, explaining how public art can directly inspire and link artists with residents. He's quoted saying, "This impressive artwork is the latest installation in a Dallas Park," in the statement released by the City of Dallas. Jenkins also highlighted that nearly a hundred parks now feature original artworks, thanks in part to the partnership with the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture.
The piece, funded by the Buckner Terrace Neighborhood Vitality Grant and the Dallas Public Art Program, prominently features a yellow butterfly – a touch of spring and a nod to local fauna. The symbolism of the butterfly embodies hope and the beauty of change.
According to Martine Elyse Philippe, Director of the Office of Arts and Culture, public art installations like "Harmony" are crucial for enhancing the community's connection to their surroundings. "The Office of Arts and Culture Public Art Program places meaningful art installations for the Dallas community to view and enjoy," Philippe stated, per the City of Dallas. She also stressed the importance of their collaboration with the Dallas Park and Recreation team to amplify the impact of these art unveilings.
The City of Dallas Public Art Program is responsible for the management, commissioning, and conservation of the city's public art collection, which includes many pieces by local and regional artists. These art installations serve to enrich a diverse array of public spaces throughout Dallas.
