An off-duty detective's morning run during the Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon took an unexpected turn when she encountered a domestic dispute that led to a dramatic police chase and an arrest on Sunday. According to 13 ON YOUR SIDE, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) detective observed a man and woman in a heated argument within a vehicle on Winchell Avenue where the man withdrew a handgun from his waistband, prompting the woman to exit the car and run away.

The situation escalated when a nearby KDPS officer, alerted by another witness, attempted to detain the suspect. The 22-year-old man fled, leading officers on a foot chase. With additional law enforcement and K-9 units from Western Michigan University Police called in, the pursuit came to a close when the suspect was found hiding under a boat in a resident's backyard, as specified by WWMT News.

During the search, a K-9 unit discovered a jacket, which the suspect had discarded, containing over 20 packages of suspected cocaine. Meanwhile, his handgun with an obliterated serial number was retrieved from the vehicle involved in the initial dispute. The man, who had also absconded from parole over a prior armed robbery conviction, now faces numerous charges, including resisting and obstructing arrest, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm with altered identifying markings, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession with intent to deliver cocaine, pending review by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office, reported WOODTV.

Local resident Despina Kaps expressed her concern during the incident, saying, "I could feel it right here, could feel something bad was going on," as she recounted to WOODTV. She was advised by a KDPS officer to secure her home as the search unfolded. The apprehension of the suspect has since highlighted the readiness of police officers, whether on or off duty, to intervene in dangerous situations.
