T.C. Broadnax Begins Tenure as Austin City Manager, Eyes Police Chief Hire and Housing ChallengesSource: CITY OF AUSTIN

A new chapter in Austin's city management opened as T.C. Broadnax took the helm today, following a successful tenure in Dallas. Broadnax inherits the role from interim city manager Jesus Garza, who stepped in after Spencer Cronk was axed over the city's botched handling of a 2023 winter storm.

A nationwide search concluded with Broadnax's appointment, touted for his three decades of experience in public administration. Settling into his new office, Broadnax isn't just facing organizational challenges but also, has a key position to fill – the vacant deputy city manager slot. "I think we will be very proud and Mr. Broadnax will make us very proud when he comes on as the permanent city manager," Austin Mayor Kirk Watson told CBS Austin.

Broadnax's paycheck shows a bump with a reported annual salary of over $470,000, a boost from his previous compensation of just over $423,000 in Dallas. This adjustment, as per a council member, was made to align with what he earned in his previous position.

His agenda is hefty, with significant issues such as hiring a permanent police chief, tackling the affordable housing and homelessness woes, and renegotiating contracts with the Austin Police Association. Broadnax has also pledged to up the ante on transparency, "There is not a space or a place I've been in neighborhood organization meetings that have five people in them in somebody's house," he explained in an interview.
