2013 Police Stats Released: Crime Up, Murders DownPhoto: Todd Lappin/Flickr
This week saw the public release of the SFPD's 2013 annual report, which serves to highlight the police department's accomplishments (remember Batkid?), to serve as an explainer and update on various police departments and task forces, and to present year-over-year crime statistics citywide.

According to the report, in 2013, San Francisco saw 48 homicides, a 30% decrease from the previous year and a return to the record lows of 2009-2011. SFPD credits predictive policing and  the cultivation of positive relationships with community and  business members as a contributing factor in the decrease.

Unfortunately, homicides were just about the only category of crime that saw a significant downtick in 2013. Aggravated assault was up 13% and theft up 18%, which the reports credits in part to the rise of cell phone thefts, and in part to a 2011 state law that sought to relieve prison overcrowding and released thousands of  low-level inmates, some of them convicted felons. Rape was also up a disturbing 76%, but the big number is due in part to a change in how the U.S. Department of Justice defines rape.

That's the bird's eye view, but how does the data look when it's broken down to your local police district? We've got the breakdown of both Park and Northern Stations, which span Hoodline's areas of coverage.

PARK STATION
Park Station serves the communities of Cole Valley, Haight Street, the Western Addition, Twin Peaks, and the Duboce and Castro areas, and comprises the area bordered by Geary Boulevard, Steiner, Market, Upper Market, 7th Avenue and the east end of Golden Gate Park.

With just one homicide recorded in 2013 and a distinct downturn in car thefts, Park Station has some good news. But with 44 more crimes against persons and 123 more property crimes from 2012, there's still a lot of room to improve. Here are the numbers from Park Station:

NORTHERN STATION
The Northern Police District covers several distinct neighborhoods, from Hayes Valley and the Lower Haight east of Steiner, to the Western Addition, Pacific Heights, Japantown, Polk Gulch, Russian Hill and the Marina. It's bounded by Larkin Street, Market Street, Steiner Street to Broadway, and west on Broadway to the Presidio.

According to the report, there were five homicides recorded in 2013, two more than in 2012. One of these was the killing of Ernesto Xe Acosta, a 23-year-old employee of the Upper Haight Whole Foods who was shot at Hayes and Webster in February 2013. The case remains open and no arrests have been made.

A triple shooting in October of last year also resulted in the death of 23-year-old Marcus Spruell, who was killed on the 400 block of Rose Street.

General theft, including auto theft, shot up from 2012's numbers, but burglary and robbery were down from the previous year. Here are Northern Station's numbers:

Though time will tell how 2014's numbers will look by end of year, so far there's been a least one death being investigated as a possible homicide in the Lower Haight: that of 48-year-old Gerald Smith, who died at his home on Page and Steiner back in April.
