Almost-Weekend Roundup: HVNA Meeting, Sales, And A Free Symphony ConcertPhoto: Kristen Loken/SFS
It's Thursday, and that means there are just one or two more to-dos before the weekend. Read on for an important neighborhood meeting tonight, plus the go-to event of the weekend and other tidbits around the neighborhood.

Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association Meeting Tonight
Held tonight from 7pm-8:45pm at the Hayes Valley Playground Clubhouse (Hayes and Buchanan), HVNA's monthly meeting will tackle some big issues with the goal to "identify unsafe conditions in Hayes Valley comprehensively, brainstorm solutions, identify which of these are priorities, and determine how they might be funded." Confirmed guests include Nick Carr (SFMTA), Menaka Mohan (SF Planning Dept.), Vallie Brown and/or Connor Johnston (aides to Supervisor London Breed), and Robin Levitt (Market/Octavia Citizen’s Advisory Committee).

Per William Bulkley's announcement:

"People on the street are concerned as are long term residents who are active in the neighborhood association and are knowledgeable but have not had answers from the City. There are projects in the pipeline but we’re not sure when they will be implemented. We will bring as many knowledgeable people together under one roof with the intention of reasonably answering community questions and concerns."

If you can't make it tonight, we'll have a full recap of the meeting tomorrow.

SF Symphony Concert at Civic Center Plaza
On Sunday, July 27 at 2pm, head to City Hall for an afternoon of free classic music, courtesy of the SF Symphony. In their annual free summer concert, violinist Benjamin Beilman will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, and the orchestra will put on additional short classical pieces by Tchaikovsky and Mozart. The event will have a festive air, with food trucks, booths and free giveaways, and there will even be a social media component, with the encore decided through an audience vote via Twitter.

Sales, Sales, Sales
If you've been out and about along Hayes Street's retail corridor, you'll have noticed a host of signs advertising screamin' deals in the 50%-70% off range. That's right: while SF denizens wait patiently for the onset of summer in September, the retail world's seasons are turning toward autumnal merchandise. In short, this is prime time for nabbing a swimsuit, irreverent tank, or well-ventilated pair of shorts for low-low prices, right here in the neighborhood.

Amy Tan Loves Hayes Valley
And finally, if you need any more inspiration to get out and about in the neighborhood, why not take a page out of Amy Tan's book (and we don't mean The Joy Luck Club)? According to the Chronicle, Tan spent a lot of time in the neighborhood during the run of the opera based on her book The Bonesetter's Daughter. "Tan ate frequently at Civic Center spots Jardiniere (300 Grove St.), Zuni (1658 Market St.), Absinthe (398 Hayes St.) and Hayes Street Grill (320 Hayes St.), especially for sole and french fries."

As always, stay safe, stay sane, and enjoy the almost-weekend ahead.
