Black Sands Gets New Murals, Bike RacksPhotos: Andrew Dudley / Hoodline
The corner of Haight and Pierce got some new additions in recent days, courtesy of the upcoming brewery Black Sands.

First up was a mural painted on the plywood facade on the building's Pierce Street side:

The work is by German-born Lara Buelow, who also goes by the moniker Zukunft Artist. SFist cited Beulow as describing her mural as "inspired by the ingredients of beer, like swirling yeast."

Further south on the Pierce side is a much larger mural that was being completed yesterday afternoon. It's a multi-paneled piece featuring quotes beginning with the phrase "LOOKING FOR" — "A Sunday kind of love," "Someone who feels it all," "You," etc.

The mural is an extension of a project that has also seen flyers posted throughout the city with similar phrases, plus tearaway strips featuring a phone number and URL.

No, this has nothing to do with the TV show Looking. Rather, it's a project by a 26-year-old local woman who wishes to remain anonymous. She's on the hunt for a boyfriend, but is also curious to hear what other people in the city are seeking.

The mural is a more permanent extension of her search, and was crafted by artist Matthew Wyne. Wyne is a graphic designer who counts type and lettering as his favorite parts of the discipline. With the mural, he looked to create something "that's professional and polished, yet still handmade and human," to match the tone of the project. The result is a 52-foot-long, 8-foot-high mural featuring a combination of stenciling and brushed lettering, and "open, simple shapes to convey the personal nature of the project."

Though the murals are temporary, two more permanent additions were also installed this week, as the SFMTA placed two bike racks on the Pierce Street side in front of the brewery:

Look for Black Sands to open late this year or early next year, depending on how construction goes. In the meantime, take a look at the new additions next time you're strolling past.
