A gas leak on Thursday morning closed multiple NoPa streets as PG&E worked to fix the problem.

We were initially notified about the problem by @SFCitizen:

Matt F. sent us a tip, saying he could smell gas throughout the neighborhood.

Tipster Cyan B. also wrote in about the disruption. "There were several fire trucks there, and police and the meter folks were blocking streets. They said it was major and wouldn't let anyone walk or drive down."

Lyon Street was closed off to pedestrians and vehicles from Hayes to Fulton, and Grove was shut down between Baker and Central. When talking to one of the cops blocking the Lyon and Baker intersection, we were told it was "no big deal."

According to PG&E spokesperson Donald Cutler, the gas leak occurred when a third-party contractor working on a house at 507 Lyon St. accidentally hit the gas line. A call was put in to PG&E by SF Water Department at 9:49am, and by 10:02am PG&E workers were on the scene. The issue was fixed at 11am and streets were reopened.

"It's an important reminder for anyone doing any digging in backyards and streets to call 811," said Cutler.  811 ("know what's below") is the number to call before doing any digging, as it connects you to a local service provider (in this case PG&E) who will come by to mark all underground utilities so construction crews can avoid them.

The gas leak had no impact on customers, and was not related to the Divisadero pipeline replacement, which is wrapping up this week
