People's Cafe Closed For RenovationsPhoto: Camden Avery/Hoodline

After being put up for sale late last year, People's Cafe is officially (temporarily) closed for business. The eatery at 1419 Haight St., which closed down in 2012 following fire damage and reopened with the same menu, furniture and decor, is currently under wraps for a remodel.

But for how long? A passerby earlier this week surmised the closure was permanent: "People's Cafe is gone," she said, "Yup, forever."

We're happy to report, though, that while ownership of the business is changing, it will continue operation as People's Cafe, albeit with a cosmetic overhaul.

According to City records, the business is now owned, as of early April, by Wong Yiu Kwan. However, a call to the phone number posted for job applicants led to Kyle, who said he's the new owner (but did not provide his last name).

Kyle said that People's Cafe was going to continue to be the same kind of restaurant it has been, and that upgrades to the space were expected to be completed in the next month to month-and-a-half. Though Kyle didn't share details, a building permit has been filed that indicates that A Plus Builder will be handling a demo of interior finish materials and fixtures.

Kyle says he's shooting for a mid-June reopening of the cafe, and that the menu will be mostly unchanged from its most recent iteration.

In the meantime, the restaurant will be hiring for servers, bussers and cooks: if you're interested in applying, email 1419peoplescafe [at] gmail [dot] com, or call (415) 992-1999.
