Hayes Valley Artists Holiday Pop-Up Opens TodayPhoto: Madeline Behrens-Brigham

A temporary art gallery has once again opened in the neighborhood this winter, offering local artists the opportunity to showcase and sell their work in time for the holiday season.

The event is organized by local resident and arts activist Madeline Behrens-Brigham, along with the Hayes Valley Artists Group and the Haight Street Art Center (which will be officially opening at 55 Laguna in 2016). The temporary gallery will operate out of a shipping container in PROXY, next to Patricia's Green at Hayes & Octavia.

Since the PROXY art pop-up debuted last year, it's grown in scope, with more and more local artists coming out of the woodwork. The 160-square-foot space measures 8 feet by 20 feet, limiting the amount of work that can be hung—and requiring a jigsaw puzzle-style art display. This year, 21 Hayes Valley artists will showcase their stuff.

A sample of locally-produced work that will be on display includes paintings by Rhonel Roberts, photography by Jose Alberto Guzman Colon, illustrations by Alice Koswara and drawings by Rose Heineman

As with last year's event, the art will rotate regularly as pieces sell, offering up a slightly different exhibition each day. Installations and seating outside the shipping container will add a bit of color to the neighborhood, and a space for neighbors to mingle.

"We'll have a slideshow of work by many artists, even those that we will be unable to show due to size," Behrens-Brigham told us, "as well as a table for crochet, drawing, showing portfolios and chatting."

The pop-up will be open from 11am to 7pm, and will run today through December 24th (and maybe a few days thereafter).
