Wing Wings To Host Blanket And Clothing Drive This FridayPhoto: Rose Garrett/Hoodline

This Friday, neighborhood chicken joint Wing Wings is getting into the holiday spirit by hosting a clothing and blanket drive to collect new and used goods to distribute to communities in the Upper Haight and the Mission.

The event is being organized by Christian Ciscle of Wing Wings, along with Christy Osorio of La Sombra Juice. "We're hoping to get people to not just focus on spending money this season, and not lose touch with the people in our communities that can use immediate help," Ciscle told us. "We all have something extra that we can afford to pass along to others more in need."

One of the recipients of this year's clothing drive will be Huckleberry House, a youth-centered program that provides 24-hour crisis services and emergency shelter for youth ages 11-18 (we've written about them before, here).

With a constant flow of people coming in to their center, Huckleberry House has asked Wing Wings for a specific list of items. Clothes that the organization needs include pajamas, socks, hoodies and new bras and underwear. The House itself could use a loveseat for its therapy room, and two chairs for its interview room. Board games, gift cards, new personal hygiene products and graphing calculators round off the list.

Wing Wings has also teamed up with La Reyna Bakery in the Mission. Employees at the 38-year-old bakery at 24th and Shotwell have noticed a lot of familiar faces sleeping on the street. They're looking for warm clothes, blankets, shoes, socks, hats, rain gear and sleeping bags to distribute to those who need them.

The clothing and blanket drive will start at 10am this Friday at 422 Haight St. Coffee, hot toddies and mimosas will accompany Wing Wing's normal menu. Additional pick-ups and drop-offs can be arranged over the weekend—just email christian [at] wingwingssf [dot] com for more details.
