Formula retail may soon be banned in a mile-long portion of the Polk Street commercial corridor. According to the Examiner, recently reelected District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin has introduced new legislation that would ban chain stores on Polk Street from Post to Filbert, and Larkin Street from Post to California.

The proposed ban comes in the wake of a proposal by Whole Foods to construct one of its new 365 stores in the former Lombardi Sports building at the corner of Polk and Jackson. Target had previously been eyeing the space, but backed out in May after facing community opposition.

Peskin's hope is that with Whole Foods and other chains out of the picture, the original proposal for the Lombardi space—62 units of housing—will go through. "It's what the area and the city needs," he told the Examiner
