Coltrane Church Eviction Postponed, Lease Extended By 60 DaysPhoto: mswine/Flickr

The Saint John Coltrane Church, which was scheduled to be evicted tomorrow morning from the location it's occupied on Fillmore Street since 2000, got a reprieve this afternoon.

As KQED reports, the church's landlord, the West Bay Conference Center, agreed to give the Church a 60-day extension on its lease, which will give it more time to source funds and find a new home. The church and its supporters had been planning a rally at 4pm this afternoon, which will now become a celebration of the extended lease.

The reprieve for the church, which has been in San Francisco since 1969, is likely only temporary; as we wrote last week, the West Bay Conference Center says that the church hasn't paid rent in 14 months. Last week, District 5 Supervisor London Breed told the Examiner that she may be able to find a home for the church at the soon-to-revamp Fillmore Heritage Center, but that remains up in the air.
