Hoodline aims to keep neighbors informed of crime and quality-of-life issues in the neighborhoods we cover. In this first Bayview crime recap and others, we won't be covering every on-the-street incident, but we'll do our best to give readers a snapshot of what's been going on.

It's been over a month since our first crime & safety roundup in the Bayview District. While many recent crime incidents are gun-related, at least five are linked to a young duo that went on an alleged crime spree around the neighborhood over the past two weeks.

On July 11th, suspects Jonathan Limu and Manu Pomele were booked at San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of involvement in five incidents around Bayview, including the robbery of a cell phone from a 16-year-old teenager who was playing Pokémon GO on Burrows and Silver; an assault and robbery of rollerblades and other personal items from a 19-year-old man on 23rd and Dakota, and armed robbery of a 58-year-old man who was sitting in his car at Vermont and Mariposa. (Note: Bayview's Captain Vaswani has issued safety tips for Pokémon GO players.)

According to police, "Lima and Pomele were booked at San Francisco County Jail on multiple counts of robbery, multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, various firearm related charges, one count of attempted carjacking, and conspiracy."

Robberies

On July 18th, officers responded to a call on Hamilton & Mansell, where they learned that a 41-year-old man had been sleeping in his car when he was approached by two suspects—one who broke the driver’s side window demanding his wallet (containing cash, debit card and Social Security card), and the other who demanded his car. The victim complied and both suspects fled in the car, a white Toyota Camry with California license plate 4HIL670.

On July 17th, a 37-year-old man tried to fight off four suspects who attempted to jump him while he was walking down Shafter Avenue around 10:35pm. The victim finally gave up his money after having a gun pointed at his face by one of the suspects, who threatened to kill him. All four suspects fled on foot.

On July 16th, three women in their 20s attacked a 24-year-old man and stole his boots on Newhall and Carroll.

Shootings

On July 17th, a 31-year-old woman was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for a gunshot to a lower limb. The victim was one of four people in a vehicle that was shot at by two men standing on the 900th block of Connecticut Street. The victim is reportedly in stable condition.

On July 17th, two men, ages 65 and 19, were taken to the hospital after being shot by a suspect at Mendell Plaza. The suspect approached them in a white van and fled Eastbound on Palou after firing shots. Both men are in stable condition but suffered shots to lower and upper limbs.

On July 15th, a 34-year-old and 38-year-old man were sitting in Silver Terrace Park with friends when they were approached by one 18-year-old woman, and two 17-year-old girls, who fired gunshots at them. The suspects fled on foot southbound on Bayshore, and were later apprehended by police near the intersection of Bayshore and Bancroft.

Assaults

On July 15th, two 36-year-old men got into a verbal altercation which escalated into a physical fight, resulting in one man stabbing the other in the chest with an ice pick. The victim was transported to the hospital, and the suspect fled on foot.

On July 1st, police responded to a call about 20 vehicles engaged in drag racing on the 600 block of Jamestown. While attempting to pull over a car that was doing donuts on the street, the officers were surrounded by several suspects. As recounted in the Bayview Station newsletter:

The officers got out of their patrol car and issued orders to the suspects, who failed to comply. One of the officers began to chase one of the combatants but in looking back, saw his partner surrounded by three subjects. He returned as the suspects closed in on the officer while threatening to “knock him out” as he attempted to verbally diffuse the situation. The biggest of the tree suspects, with clenched fists, approached the officer as if to strike him at which point the officer’s partner intervened and physically attempted to subdue the suspect. Both officers fought for their safety, but as they were outnumbered by nearly 30 subjects, lost custody of the suspect when he was helped by others. The suspect was loaded into one of the cars that drove off along with all the other “side show” participants. One of the cars deliberately drove at one of the officers, swerving several times in an attempt to strike him as he tried to move out of the way. He was fortunately able to leap out of its way as it approached the exit gate.

Vehicle Incidents

On July 15th, a six-year-old boy was playing by himself in a van when it started rolling. Upon jumping out, he was pinned to the car and a structure beam, and was later taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On July 16th, police responded to a “gunshots fired” call on Gilroy and Jamestown, which turned out to be a vehicle on fire and making popping sounds. The SFFD responded to extinguish the fire. No suspects have been identified in the arson.

Hot Prowl

On June 29th, police responded to call on Mercury Street, where a 39-year-old woman heard someone knocking on her door. She responded and found no one there. After she went to bed, she heard footsteps in her house. Assuming it was her roommate, she called out and then heard footsteps running down the stairs. She went to investigate and found that the window to the garage was broken, and her roommate’s laptop was shoved into a pillow case on the table.

Bayview Station's community meetings are held at Bayview Station (201 Williams Ave.) at 6pm on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be Tuesday, August 2nd.
