North Beach's Massive Menorah Stolen From Washington Square ParkPhoto: Joe Vazquez/Twitter

The kickoff of Hanukkah was compromised over the weekend, when the massive menorah that decorates North Beach's Washington Square Park was purloined by unknown thieves.

According to CBS5, the menorah, which was installed two weeks ago, appears to have vanished sometime on Friday or Saturday. Members of North Beach Chabad, led by Rabbi Peretz Mochkin, discovered it was missing when they went to light the first candle on Saturday evening.

The menorah is over six feet tall, with a three-by-six-foot stand, and weighs more than 100 pounds. It's made of brass, and metal recyclers are particularly encouraged to be on the lookout for anyone trying to recycle large brass pieces.

If you've spotted it, you can contact the SFPD anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444, or text-a-tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.
