A structural collapse occurred this morning at a mixed-use building under construction at 3093 Broadway. No fatalities were reported, but 13 people with injuries were transported to local hospitals.

According to an Oakland Fire Department Battalion Chief Ian McWhorter, the collapse occurred when construction workers on a second floor were pouring fresh concrete. After the floor gave way, several workers fell down to a lower level, while others were left hanging from construction scaffolding.

"Some people were able to self-extricate" from the wet concrete, said McWhorter, adding that "on-site construction workers did a great job" helping injured colleagues before "our members showed up and took charge of the situation."

A team from California Occupational Safety Health Administration and a building engineer are expected to visit the site today to perform a safety inspection.

The building under construction was formerly a Bay City Chevrolet dealership. According to East Bay Redeveloped, part of the dealership's original structure on the corner of Broadway and Hawthorne will be incorporated into the new building.
