Here's a recap of crimes in the Tenderloin since our last recap in late August, beyond what we have separately reported. All information comes from SFPD reports unless otherwise noted. 

Pickpocket gets away with woman's phone

On September 11th, a man said to be around 30 years old attempted to steal a 22-year-old woman’s phone from her back pocket as she was walking around 7pm on the 700 block of Polk Street (near Eddy).

The two struggled, but the man overpowered the victim and fled on foot with her phone. No arrest was made.

Man treated for brain injury after random punching

Around 7am on September 11th, a 64-year-old man was walking to work near the intersection of 5th and Market streets when he was approached by a man said to be in his forties.

The suspect punched the victim on the left side of his head, causing him to fall and hit his head on the concrete. The suspect walked away and the victim was transported to the hospital, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening but traumatic brain injury. The suspect has not been identified, and no arrest was made.

Man robbed of phone while sitting in car

A 30-year-old man was sitting in his car on the phone near the intersection of Golden Gate and Market streets around 10:10pm on September 8th when a man said to be 30 years old reached in.

The suspect punched the victim and stole his phone, then fled on foot. He has not been identified, and no arrests were made. 

Bike crash causes life-threatening injuries

A 55-year-old man was biking southbound on Jones Street at 10:24pm on September 5th, when he contacted a vehicle stopped for a red light—also on Jones Street—at the intersection with Eddy Street.

The bicyclist was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver has not been identified, and no arrest was made.

Arrest made in morning robbery attempt

A 26-year-old man entered a business on the unit block of Cyril Magnin Street (near Eddy) around 9:30am on September 2nd.

The man had pulled out his money to make a purchase when a 47-year-old man approached the check-out counter and snatched the younger man’s money. The suspect attempted to flee the store, but a struggle ensued. Police arrived and arrested the suspect. 

Man assaulted for refusing to give free drinks

Around 11:08am on September 1st, a 43-year-old man was inside a business at 1200 Market St. (near 8th) when a man said to be 35 years old entered and demanded free drinks. The younger man was asked to leave.

An altercation occurred when the victim tried to stop the suspect at the door as he attempted to steal items, and the suspect produced a knife and injured the victim. The suspect fled on foot and has not been identified. 

Man robbed after padlock attack

At 10:30pm on August 30th, a 34-year-old man was assaulted by three men said to be in their forties near the intersection of Leavenworth and Turk streets.

One of the suspects hit the victim with a padlock while the other two punched him. The three suspects stole the man’s backpack and tablet and fled. No arrests were made.

Man robbed at knifepoint

A man said to be in his 30s approached a 27-year-old man with a knife near the intersection of Leavenworth and McAllister streets around 11:25pm on August 30th. He demanded the victim’s property.

The victim surrendered his cellphone, wallet, commercial driver’s license, credit cards, and cash, and the suspect fled northbound on Leavenworth. No arrests were made.

Man knocked unconscious after argument

Just after midnight on August 30th, a witness saw a 36-year-old man in an argument with two male suspects said to be in their twenties.

The victim was hit in the head, knocked unconscious and treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. No arrests were made. 

Man thrown into bus after deflecting smoldering cigarette 

A 52-year-old man was waiting at a bus stop near the intersection of Market and Jones streets at 6:44pm on August 28th, when someone threw a cigarette to him. When the man tried to deflect the thrown object, he accidentally hit one of two men nearby, both said to be in their 20s.

Both men threw the victim into the side of a stopped bus and fled westbound on Market. No arrests were made, and the victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. 

Partygoer accused of assault, robbery

Around 2:00am on August 27th, a 24-year-old man returned to a party being thrown by a 28-year-old woman searching for his belongings, which he claimed to have left behind.

The man accused the woman of hiding his things, assaulted her, and stole her phone, as well as the phone of a 26-year-old woman also at the party. He was later taken into custody. 

Woman robbed despite putting up a fight

Shortly before midnight on August 27th, a 31-year-old woman was stopped by a man said to be 50 years old on the 1100 block of Market Street (near Jones).

The man demanded she hand over her belongings, and when the woman refused, the suspect snatched her bag, wallet, and cell phone, and fled on foot. No arrest was made.

Man reports three-on-one robbery

A 37-year-old man arrived at the Tenderloin police station late on the night of August 25th, reporting that three men had attacked him near the intersection of Geary and Leavenworth streets.

The victim said the three men surrounded him, and one of them struck him with a stick or a bat before the men stole his wallet, phone and backpack. No arrests have been made.
