Chinatown Gets A New Tiki Bar: 'The Kon-Tiki'Photo: The Kon-Tiki/Yelp

A new tiki bar has opened its doors in the neighborhood. Called The Kon-Tiki, the new addition is located at 347 14th St. (between Webster St. & Harrison St.) in Oakland Chinatown.

As we reported back in August, the Kon-Tiki is taking over for Longitude, a fellow tiki bar which closed in February. New owners Christ Aivaliotis and Matthew Reagan have kept some of the previous bar's decor, but added twists of their own like extra decorations.

The two bartenders are alumni of nearby Hawker Fare, which also closed its Oakland outpost this year. They've brought on the restaurant's former chef, Manuel Bonilla, to create a menu of tropical bites like twice-cooked pork belly with pineapple mustard, crab rangoon dip with wonton chips, and grilled sesame-soy short ribs. There's also a pu pu platter, for those who'd like to sample a bit of everything.

The drink menu features classic tiki drinks like the Navy Grog, Tropical Itch, and Zombie, and some new creations like the Virgin's Downfall, a mezcal-based riff on the classic Missionary's Downfall.

The new tiki bar has proven popular thus far, with a five-star rating out of two reviews on Yelp.

Dave G., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on November 4th, said: "Awesome. Great food, great drinks, super authentic, great lighting and service is super friendly. We were going to go to Kamdesh across the street and this caught our eye. Glad we ventured in."

Yelper Leslie Z. added: “Brand new spot in the old Longitude location. Happy to see Oakland get a legit tiki bar! Delicious drinks and tasty eats—those grilled mushrooms are amazing. This is my new favorite spot."

The Kon-Tiki is now open at 347 14th St., so head on over to check it out.
