Great Highway gets food trucks on weekends when it's closed to carsImage: @california.kahve via Instagram

The Great Highway is car-free this entire Thanksgiving weekend, adding a couple more days of pedestrian recreation for the holiday. It’s also adding something new to the weekend-only car-free festivities. SF Rec and Parks announced this week that food trucks will be on the Great Highway on weekends, starting this Saturday and Sunday.

According to a press release from Rec and Parks, this is “a three-month pilot program for food trucks on the Upper Great Highway during days the roadway is closed to vehicle traffic.” So food trucks on the weekend pedestrian thoroughfare may or may not continue past February 2021. And there are currently only two food trucks participating, but Rec and Parks says they’re willing to welcome more.

Plant-based burger truck Viva Vegan was already out there last Sunday, and according to Rec and Parks, “began serving its fare Sunday in the northbound lane of the Great Highway at Judah.” It will be at the same location in the weekends to come, on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Organic espresso and matcha purveyor California Kahve joins the mix this weekend, and their vintage camper kitchen will be at the Great Highway and Taraval Streets. Their Great Highway weekend hours will be Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

While that’s only two food trucks for now, Rec and Parks says they “will continue to expand the pilot program through its rolling request for proposals process.” Food truck proprietors who are interested in participating can email Brian DeWitt at [email protected] for more information on reserving a slot.
