Dalton Duo Charged in January Drive-By Shooting, Accused of Unprovoked AttackSource: Whitfield County Sheriff's Office

Two men have been slapped with serious charges for a drive-by shooting that rocked Dalton's streets in January, police say. Joshua Lee Edwards, 36, and Gordon Ray Austin, 40, both residents of Dalton, are now staring down the barrel of the justice system for their alleged roles in the near-downtown shootout.

The harrowing incident played out at the crossroads of Hamilton Street and Tyler Street on an otherwise mundane January afternoon—just as the clock nudged past 4 p.m., reports FOX 5 Atlanta. Two unsuspecting men were treading the sidewalk when a white Ford F-150, driven first by Edwards and then by Austin, screeched by with Edwards reportedly unleashing at least five shots in what seemed a moment of madness one of the men got nicked by a stray bullet but thankfully wasn't seriously wounded, while his companion managed to evade the bullets completely.

Authorities, with help from local surveillance footage and a slew of interviews, identified Edwards as the triggerman, according to NewsChannel 9. Austin, who was already cooling his heels in jail for a separate probation violation, had the new charge added to his sheet right there in his cell. Edwards, on the flip side, wasn't nabbed until a routine traffic stop turned into a game of wanted man bingo on the Highway 41 bypass.

Edwards is now facing a double dose of aggravated assault charges while Austin is tacked with being party to the crime and, to add to his woes, a probation violation—all unfolding in what investigators are calling an unprovoked and random act of violence on unsuspecting victims whose only mistake was walking on the wrong street at the wrong time. Meanwhile, Dalton was also the stage for a separate road rage incident, now linked to a suspect arrested all the way down in Florida—for a small town, Dalton roads have seen more than their fair share of gunplay lately.
