The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has laid bare the persistent health disparities plaguing Black and Latinx communities, as revealed by the latest LA County Health Survey. Grappling with disproportionate inequities in health, access to care, housing, and economic security, these groups were found to significantly lag behind their counterparts in health outcomes, highlighting the enduring scars of systemic injustices.

The survey, established in 1997, serves as an important barometer to steadily monitor the pulse of residents' health behaviors and conditions. This year’s survey, first of its kind in a post-pandemic era, managed to responsibly gather conclusive data from approximately 9,372 adults and 7,391 children across the county, despite the challenge to ensure a comprehensive reach.

Key findings exposed that communities of color especially continue to suffer under the weight of historical inequities that have long shaped health and wellness in the region. Economic and social conditions, rooted in discriminatory policies, have placed these demographics in a more vulnerable position to unhealthy outcomes and behaviors.

"The 2023 LA County Health Survey findings confront us with the stark realities of how historical inequities continue to shape the health and well-being of our communities, especially among our Black and Latinx residents," Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of Public Health, stated. Committed to tackling these disparities head-on, the Public Health department pledges to tightly partner with community allies in pursuit of equity and justice that stand to benefit every individual's health prospects, regardless of racial or ethnic background.
