CHICAGO — Nearly seven years after a deadly shooting disrupted a South Side barbecue, police have apprehended and charged a man with the murder of Alfred Mitchell Jr., who was killed at the gathering back in August 2017. The shooting, which occurred in Bronzeville, also left at least six others injured as bullets flew while victims stood innocuously on the sidewalk, ABC7 Chicago reported.

Authorities arrested 24-year-old Antonio Dickerson at his home in Alsip on Tuesday. While the Chicago Police have not yet disclosed the motive behind the shooting spree that took place on the corner of 37th and Michigan, Dickerson now faces several felony counts, including first-degree murder. The incident interrupted what was otherwise a typical neighborhood gathering, individuals merely seeking to enjoy each other's company over grilled dishes, only to be caught up in a sudden and violent altercation.

Alfred Mitchell Jr., who was just 28 at the time of his death, was one of those struck by gunfire and was subsequently pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital. Alongside him, the fates of six others were marred by the reckless disregard for life displayed that summer night. The repercussions of such actions have lingered, undiminished, long after the echo of gunshots faded.

According to the WGN-TV report, Dickerson is due in court Thursday to begin to answer for his alleged role in a crime that has to solely bear the burden of proof within the hallowed halls of justice, awaiting adjudication that could potentially bring some semblance of closure to a community long haunted by the tragic events of that night.
