In a move to cast a spotlight on America’s unsung heroines, President Joe Biden signed an executive order aimed at amplifying women's historical contributions across national parks and historic sites.

The directive outlines a plan to bolster the Federal Government's recognition of the integral roles that women and girls of diverse backgrounds have played in shaping the nation, despite being often overlooked, the command instructs the Secretary of the Interior to submit a report within 180 days assessing existing historic sites related to women's history identifying opportunities to enlighten the public on such figures and events, as announced by The White House.

This latest presidential action builds upon prior efforts to advance equity, including the establishment of the White House Gender Policy Council and previous executive orders aimed at racial equity and underserved communities. Acknowledging the work of pioneering women from Harriet Tubman to Mamie Till-Mobley, Biden stated, "By honoring the women leaders of the past, we tell a more complete story of America and help build a more equal and equitable present and future."

According to the order, there's a push for a comprehensive overview theme study on women's history, coupled with additional research focusing on women's pivotal roles across various American epochs and sectors including the sciences, arts, and various social movements, the report due from the Department of the Interior will deploy an intersectional lens, promising to include a diverse cast of women from differing backgrounds and walks of life.

Furthermore, the Secretary of the Interior is expected to collaborate closely with the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum to ensure that the findings from these theme studies are potentially integrated into museum exhibits. Implementation of the order will involve consultations with top White House advisors and the Council on Environmental Quality to ensure a harmonious and effective execution.

The executive order concludes by stating that nothing within should affect the legal powers of government entities nor create enforceable rights, pending availability of appropriations, underlining the tightrope walked between ambition for historical justice and the practicalities of government operation.
