A parole absconder was shot by police on Belle Isle, Detroit after he allegedly pointed a weapon at the officers attempting to arrest him, officials reported. The incident took place around 10:40 a.m. yesterday, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

The confrontation unfolded when members of the sheriff's office tether unit, aiming to apprehend the man for absconding from parole, found him near the driving range on Belle Isle. Officials from the sheriff's office have stated that the man brandished a weapon at the arresting deputies. CBS Detroit has noted that law enforcement returned fire after the man pointed what appeared to be a firearm at them.

Chief of Operations with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Scott Gatti, said the deputies had called out to the man upon spotting him. "He turned with what appeared to be a 9mm long gun pointed at them," Gatti explained as reported by WXYZ. The deputies fired "in self defense", Gatti added. The wounded man, believed to be between 35-40 years old, was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

No injuries were reported among the law enforcement personnel or the public. The suspect was treated at the scene before being pulled from a wooded swampy area behind the Belle Isle golf course and taken to the hospital, as clickondetroit stated. Michigan State Police’s Special Investigation Section has now taken over to fully investigate the shooting, and they stated that a thorough report will be turned over to the prosecutor's office upon completion.

Details remain limited, but authorities have assured that there is no continuing threat to the public following the incident. The identity of the parole absconder has not yet been released as the investigation is ongoing and it is expected to reveal the circumstances that led to the man absconding and ultimately to the confrontation that occurred on Belle Isle.
