An Everett High School library just got a new name, and it's to honor a man whose dedication to education and local history is as rich as the library's book collection. The Everett Public Schools Board of Directors stamped their approval on renaming the former Everett High School Library to Lawrence E. O’Donnell Everett High Library. Their decision, made just last week on April 23, pays tribute to a man's unwavering commitment to the Everett community.

According to a report by the Everett Post, the PTA brought the name change proposal forward. The board recognized O’Donnell's "passion for Everett and the inspiration he has kindled in countless others." O’Donnell, caught off guard by the honor, admitted at Tuesday’s Board Meeting that he was "truly flabbergasted" upon hearing the news.

O’Donnell isn't just an Everett High alumnus from the class of 1955; he's a veritable community icon. In his career spanning nearly half a century in Everett Public Schools, he served in various capacities - a teacher, counselor, dean, vice principal, and finally a district’s Director of Facilities and Planning. After retiring in April 1989, he didn't retire his passion – he continued to author and co-author books delving into local history.

Moreover, as "the sweetest, genuine, human being you will ever meet," O’Donnell's affection for both Everett and education is unparalleled, Shepherd told the Everett Post. This sentiment reverberated through a roomful of 400 people who sprung up in a standing ovation when his upcoming recognition was announced at the Everett High auction last Saturday. A testament to the deep-rooted impact O’Donnell has had on his community.

The dedication ceremony is slated for June 5 at the newly minted Lawrence E. O’Donnell Everett High Library, with the festivities kicking off at 5 p.m., and a program planned for 6 p.m. It's a family affair, three generations deep, as O’Donnell's kin have all walked the hallways of Everett High School. “I’ve always been proud of the Everett school district and proud of my family," O’Donnell said. The community, undoubtedly, shares that pride manifold.
