Portland Airport Unrolls Nostalgia with Iconic 1988 Carpet in New Terminal Come AugustSource: Google Street View

The Portland International Airport is rolling out the past quite literally with the reinstallation of its "iconic" 1988 carpet, a piece of PDX lore that's as quirky as the city itself. The beloved teal tapestry, adorned with splashes of blue, purple, and red, is making a comeback in the airport's new main terminal, set for an August reveal, OregonLive reports. In a move that's sure to prompt countless selfies, the retro design, inspired by the view air traffic controllers see on their screens, will greet locals and travelers alike once more.

First laid down in the late '80s,, PDX's carpet became a staple of Portland culture, only to be torn up in 2015, which caused uproar on social media. Following public outcry, the airport made commitments to revive the patterned pathfinder when renovations were completed. Now, as the grand opening of the renovated terminal nears, KATU announces, the airport is making good on that promise.

True to the city's reputation for keeping things local, nearly 6,000 square feet of the nostalgia-inducing carpet will be laid out across the new terminal, mostly in rest areas and performance spots for local musicians. A Pacific Northwest-based company is responsible for the installation, though other areas will flaunt hard surfaces such as terrazzo and Oregon-grown white oak, according to KGW.

While travelers were originally expecting to see the main terminal completed by late May, a slight delay has pushed the opening to August. The Port of Portland has confirmed the revised timeline, betting that the airport's aesthetic—a blend of new and old, contemporary and classic—will echo the eclectic pulse of the city it serves, despite, the shift in schedule.
