Birch Aquarium at UC San Diego Celebrates First-Ever Hatching of Little Blue Penguin ChicksSource: Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography

The Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego has a reason to pop the champagne, but not too loudly to scare the new arrivals. According to their latest news, the aquarium celebrates the hatching of five Little Blue Penguin chicks, a first in its penguin care and conservation history.

Kayla Strate, Assistant Curator of Birds at Birch Aquarium, couldn't hide her excitement, "It's so exciting to introduce these juveniles to the colony as they are curious and adventurous and a delight to watch explore their new home through diving and socializing," she told Birch Aquarium's newsroom. The chicks entered the world between January 1 and February 20, with a gender tally of four males and one awaiting confirmation.

The arrival of these birds marks a significant step forward in the institution's commitment to avian breeding programs in collaboration with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Strate notes via Birch Aquarium that the Penguin Care Team at the aquarium has been lauded for their relentless round-the-clock efforts, which "took expert-level skills to successfully raise our little penguins by hand."

The blue-tinged chicks spent their first tender months behind the scenes, sharpening their piscatorial proficiencies in dining, mingling, and swimming. When they hit the three-month milestone, each chick "graduated" and joined the older penguins in their enclosure. Thanks to the aquarium's cross-institutional matchmaking, the penguin colony boasts genes from five zoos and aquariums, intending to bolster Little Blue Penguin populations under human care.

Visitors eager to spot these new residents of the Beyster Family Little Blue Penguins exhibit should look out for their distinctive wing bands – ranging from white pairs to yellow and brown. For those who can't get enough of these seabirds, Birch Aquarium offers daily talks and feedings for an immersive experience. The schedule for these events is up on the aquarium's website for anyone interested.
