Former Memphis Caregiver Charged With Abuse of Vulnerable Adult, TBI ReportsSource: Google Street View

A former Memphis caregiver faces serious charges following an alleged incident of abuse against a vulnerable adult. Dammie Avant, 43, has been charged with one count of abuse by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), according to a recent report by Action News 5.

The investigation into the abuse began in August 2023 after Adult Protective Services tipped off Special Agents to a case involving a defenseless individual under the care of a caregiver in a Memphis home. It was during this investigation that evidence pointed directly to Avant as the person responsible for the victim's mistreatment. The Shelby County Grand Jury returned an indictment in December, marking a chilling chapter in a string of events that culminated with his arrest on May 3rd, as reported by the official TBI Newsroom.

Avant, whose full name is Dammie Monzqie Avant, was taken into custody by agents with the Medicaid Fraud Control Division and the Memphis Police Department. Subsequent to his arrest, he was booked into the Shelby County Jail.

The final details of the case and its proceedings will unfold over the coming months in court, as the TBI’s Medicaid Fraud Control Division continues its diligence in cracking down on crimes against vulnerable adults. Information provided by WREG News disclosed that the investigation by special agents was drawn out over several months after the initial report by Adult Protective Services.
