Hayward Manhunt Ends with Suspect Andres Sanchez in Custody on Murder and Multiple Felony ChargesSource: Google Street View

A violent confrontation on the streets of Hayward has led to a desperate manhunt and a grim discovery, local authorities report. On April 26, an argument between two men escalated when one, now identified as 38-year-old Andres Sanchez, allegedly drew a gun and opened fire, fatally shooting his opponent. According to the Hayward Police Department, witnesses failed to alert the police immediately, remaining silent until providing a belated account on April 28.

An exhaustive search has ensued since the witnesses finally contacted the authorities. Officers found signs of the shooting, but neither the victim nor the suspect were anywhere to be found until the train tracks at Tennyson Road and Leidig Court bore witness to another scene. Sanchez, on an all-terrain vehicle, attempted to escape law enforcement efforts. He led the officers on a chase that ended with him barricading himself inside a garage at an occupied residence. Luckily, the homeowners involved emerged unscathed.

After hours of negotiations involving the Hayward Police Department’s Special Response Unit, Fremont Police Department, and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Sanchez eventually surrendered. However, the search for the shooting victim bore fruit later that day when detectives uncovered a body bearing gunshot wounds and speculated that the body had been left undiscovered for days near the scene.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office has withheld the name of the deceased pending formal identification protocols. Sanchez now faces a litany of charges, including outstanding felony warrants, felony evasion, home invasion robbery, and murder. The Hayward Police Department confirmed these details after collecting evidence and witness testimonies that clearly depicted the events leading to their unfortunate conclusion.

This case, registered under case number 2024-23214, marks the fourth homicide in Hayward this year. Investigators are urging anyone with insight into this incident to reach out to Detective Scinto at 510-293-7176.
