K9 Hero Mitch Takes a Bite Out of Crime, Capturing Suspected Car Thief After Dramatic 49-Mile Chase in Harris CountySource: Facebook/Mark Herman, Harris County Constable Precinct 4

A brazen car thief led police on a wild 49-mile chase, only to be taken down by a dogged K9 named Mitch. Constable Mark Herman's Office said the pursuit kicked off after a man in a stolen vehicle refused to stop for deputies in the 22800 block of Holzwarth Road on May 6, 2024.

According to the law enforcement authorities, during the high-speed chase, the suspect, later identified as Gerardo Rangel, tried to ram a deputy with his truck. After the vehicle chase came to a halt, Rangel bolted on foot. But his flight was short-lived, thanks to the four-legged law enforcer who swiftly tracked him down.

The canine's valor was praised in a statement on the Constable's official Facebook page, which recounted the fugitive's capture. The constabulary detailed that Rangel was nabbed and subsequently charged with Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, Felony Evading in a Motor Vehicle, and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.

"Gerardo Rangel was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, Felony Evading in a Motor Vehicle and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. His total bond was set at $155,000.00 out of the 185th District Court." "a statement by Constable Mark Herman.
