Manhattan Beach Sees Spike in Theft and Vandalism, Police Urge Vigilance as Suspects Arrested and At LargeSource: Facebook/Manhattan Beach Police Department

It's been a bustling week for the Manhattan Beach Police Department (MBPD) with the latest crime snapshot revealing a mix of thefts, robberies, and vandalism across the beachside city. According to the statistics released by the MBPD, there have been 13 arrests, 768 calls for service, and a total of 48 crime reports filed between May 2 and May 8. Patrol areas across the city have been impacted, as indicated in the department's detailed rundown of incidents.

In a bold daylight robbery on May 2nd, two individuals boldly snatched a cellphone right from the victim's hands in the 1800 block of Rosecrans Avenue. This daring duo, who had pulled up in a white Range Rover, managed to quickly jump back into their ride and speed away. However, their escapade was cut short when Hawthorne PD managed to stop the vehicle later that day. As it turned out, these culprits were linked to a similar crime out in Downey, leading to their apprehension as per information shared on the MBPD's website.

Not all criminals managed to make a clean getaway. On May 5, a would-be thief's attempt to outpace the police on a stolen bike led them directly into the arms of the law—and the bike's rightful owner—inside Von's market. When confronted, the suspect was found to have lifted the bike from the victim's garage only moments before being spotted by the officer.

Amid the series of thefts, a group of juveniles decided to stir trouble at Metlox Plaza by engaging in a fight on May 4th. In a quick succession of events, one youth was punched, another was robbed of an e-bike battery, and a third was relieved of their necklace. The gang responsible managed to evade capture that day and remains at large, as the investigation continues. The MBPD has since advised residents, especially with the warmer weather drawing more people outdoors, to remain vigilant. They suggest keeping personal belongings close and utilizing waterproof bags for keys while enjoying the surf to help prevent such crimes. Additional tips include avoiding the common mistake of hiding vehicle keys near your car and ensuring no valuables are left within sight inside your parked car. These recommendations come from MBPD's recent crime prevention tips, aimed at deterring would-be thieves.

Finally, those who have any pressing queries for the MBPD will have to wait a bit longer to voice them. The town hall meeting initially planned has now been pushed back to June 26th. Residents looking for more information or who wish to submit questions in advance can reach out to the department through the contact email provided on their official notice.
