Fulton & Divisadero Hit-And-Run Lands Cyclist On WindshieldPhoto: KPIX

A local cyclist had a dramatic commute on Monday morning. As he rode his bike along Fulton Street to work, Maxwell Wallace said that a red Cadillac side-swiped him and then subsequently attempted to run him over.

Wallace recounted the incident to two different news outlets, and the stories differ slightly. He told the Examiner that he had cycled onto the side of the road to avoid construction that was blocking the bike lane when the car swiped him. The car stopped, and he walked around in front of it.

However, he told KPIX that the driver didn't stop, and that the incident occurred in the middle of the intersection at Fulton and Divisadero. “I yelled, ‘Stop!’ I was pretty shocked that he didn’t stop,” he said.

In either case, Wallace said he was in front of the car, attempting to take a photo of its front license plate, when the driver of the Cadillac hit the gas. To keep from getting run over, Wallace said he jumped onto the hood of the car. A witness captured the scene (pictured above, via KPIX) on camera.

The car traveled about 100 feet with Wallace on its windshield before stopping. Wallace got off, and the car fled the scene. He suffered some injuries to his wrist and hands, but is otherwise unscathed.

This isn't the first time a car has attempted to run down a cyclist and ended up trapping them on a windshield; a similar incident, involving a DPT parking officer, occurred at Octavia & Oak last September.

Officer Carlos Manfredi told the Examiner that the details of this case are still unclear. "It’s not sure if the person deliberately tried to run him over, or the cyclist went on the hood. We have one side of the story, we don’t have the other side of the story.”

Manfredi added that if the car is found, it will be cited for both a hit-and-run and for not giving the cyclist the required three-foot buffer zone.

The situation is under investigation. We'll let you know if the driver is found.
