Springtime in North Beach kicks off in a big way this week, with a couple of kid-friendly Easter events on one end of the spectrum and a remote-controlled El Camino on the other.

To help honor the late Ray Piccinini, a North Beach resident who visited the children's wards in city hospitals dressed as the Easter Bunny, North Beach Neighbors is helping to sponsor the second annual Buona Pasqua! Ray Piccinini Easter Parade and pancake breakfast on Saturday. The breakfast kicks off at 9:30am at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club (1630 Stockton St.) and the parade will follow starting at 11am, around Washington Square Park.

If that doesn't satisfy your bunny fix, Ghirardelli Square (900 North Point St.) is hosting an Easter Festival starting at noon. The event will include stands for face painting and glitter tattoos, along with jazz bands, photos with the Easter Bunny, and no shortage of chocolate.

If large woodland mammals and cacao-based treats aren't your thing, Fort Mason's free Fort Nights: Neon Robot Iceberg” opens on Friday, featuring multimedia art from more than 20 artists and musicians. The lineup includes Bruce Tomb’s “Maria del Camino,” a remote-controlled El Camino that drives vertically on tractor treads.

And if you're in need of some laughs, The Purple Onion at Kells (530 Jackson St.) will host a Women Gettin' Witty comedy show on Friday, featuring Loren Kraut, Sara DeForestAudrey Crescenti and many more female comedians.

Don't forget to check out the Gofundme campaign for the victim of the fatal hit-and-run on Broadway and Powell Street on March 11th. The daughter of the victim is looking to raise money for her father's memorial service. The driver of the van still has not been found.

Elsewhere in the area, SFGate covered some of the neighborhood clean-up efforts that we highlighted last week. It also selected Tosca Cafe (242 Columbus Ave.), Buena Vista Cafe (2765 Hyde St.), Original Joe's (601 Union St.) and Alito's (8 Fisherman's Wharf) as four of the true classic restaurants in San Francisco.

Finally, that smog-laced hamlet to our south, Los Angeles, came up short at last week's International Pizza Challenge, as Matt Molina of Capo's (641 Vallejo St.) took the win against Tim Silva of Pizza My Heart. His winning Crown Point pie will be available on Capo's menu starting this week. But cheer up, L.A.: you still have what's left of the Lakers.
