San Franciscans aren't shy about dressing up, and with Halloween around the corner, there's a common theme to the week's events ahead.

If the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon feels like too much work, swing by the San Francisco Dungeon (145 Jefferson St.) on Friday morning to be one of the first 300 people in line for free admission to the new Escape Alcatraz Drop Ride, which simulates an escape from the prison through the choppy Bay waters.

Then get that costume ready for the 1st Annual Tacolicious North Beach Costume Contest, where costume prizes, specialty cocktails and, of course, tacos await you.

On Saturday, you can bring the little monsters in your life over to the 2nd Annual Chinatown Halloween Neighborhood Festival at the Chinatown YMCA (855 Sacramento St.), where there will be carnival games, a costume contest and a haunted house.

On Sunday, there's Halloween at Ghirardelli Square, with free events for kids and store-to-store trick-or-treating. From there, make your way to the annual North Beach Halloween Extravaganza at Joe DiMaggio Playground (651 Lombard St.), where there will be more trick-or-treating, an inflatable slide, fortune teller and a haunted house for older kids. Or head to the Exploratorium, where admission is free for the day.

In local news this week, Waxman's in Ghirardelli Square made a list of hot new Italian restaurants in the city, a documentary on last year's D3 supervisor race opens on Friday, and you're probably walking over a former cemetery every day. Think happy thoughts.
