Here's Your North Beach Weekend Agenda

With the Blue Angels out of town and rain on the way, here's some indoor events around the North Beach area this weekend.

It's a great time to celebrate the spirit of the neighborhood, starting with Friday's WORD/JAZZ at Doc's Lab (124 Columbus Ave.), part of the Litquake literary festival going on across the city this weekend.  Following in the footsteps of jazz and spoken-word basement readings in North Beach from previous generations, poets Chinaka Hodge, devorah major, and RyanNicole will provide a contemporary update, starting at 7pm.

That segues nicely into Saturday's North Beach Stories with Ray Hanna at the Beat Museum (540 Broadway). Hanna will take the audience on a comical and musical journey through the streets of North Beach, including "all the sleaze, drugs, trailblazing strippers, and punks acting out, Timothy Leary performing at a Broadway nightclub, sheer rock-and-roll madness at the Mabuhay." The event is free, and starts at 7pm.

Finally, keep an eye on City Lights Books (261 Columbus Ave) next Tuesday, when former Presidential candidate and progressive consumer advocate Ralph Nader will appear to celebrate his new book Breaking Through Power: It's Easier than We Think at a free event from 7-9pm.

Going up. On a Thursday. #tbt #fleetweek #blueangels #sf

In other local news, there were plenty of festivities involved with last week's Italian Heritage parade, and the Bold Italic chose Jackson Square's Trestle as one of the best affordable prix fixe menus in the city

Now, on to our editor's picks for the days ahead. For a full list of what's going on around town this weekend and beyond, don't forget to check our hoodline.com/events.
