While we don't report on every incident, we do our best to keep you informed of major crimes and safety concerns in the neighborhood. Here's a selection of crimes reported in and around the SFPD's Tenderloin District over the two weeks since our last recap. All details are pulled from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.
Man dies several months after being attacked with glass bottle
As we noted earlier this week, 56-year-old William Evans died on February 22nd, from injuries he sustained from an attack with a glass bottle that occurred in November on Market Street (between 7th and 8th streets). No arrest has been made in the crime.
Hallidie Plaza shooting injures teen
An 18-year-old woman was standing in Hallidie Plaza—near the sunken entrance to the Powell Street BART and Muni Station—when she heard gunshots around 2:35am on February 21st. She started to flee the scene, but was shot in the leg, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. A 23-year-old male suspect was later arrested.
Man pushed, cell phone stolen
A 47-year-old man was walking westbound on the unit block of Golden Gate Avenue (at Market) around 9:15pm on February 19th when he was pushed from behind by another man and injured. The suspect stole the victim’s cell phone, and has not been detained.
Dog poop argument leads to coffee scalding
Just after noon on February 18th, a 26-year-old woman was walking her dog with a 36-year-old male companion at 6th and Stevenson streets. When a 64-year-old woman asked whether they were going to clean up after the dog, the man said he intended to return with a baggie.
The suspect must not have believed him, because she then threw her hot coffee on the woman, injuring her badly enough that she had to be taken to the hospital. The man then “got into a scuffle” with the suspect, who was later detained by police.
Man knocked unconscious by pair of men
A 37-year-old man was left unconscious around 2:45am on February 18 after two men attacked and punched him near the intersection of Eddy and Hyde streets. No property was reported stolen, and the victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspects have not been detained.
Six-on-one stabbing attack on Market
Six men tried to rob a 56-year-old man who was walking along the 900 block of Market Street (at 5th Street) around 3:30pm on February 17th. Some of the suspects punched the victim while another chased him into the street and stabbed him. The suspects all fled on foot and have not been identified.
Suspect detained in Eddy Street homicide/vehicle collision
As we reported last week, an Oakland resident was arrested in the early-morning shooting death of a driver (and subsequent vehicle collision) at Eddy Street and Van Ness Avenue, which occurred around 4:15am on February 15th. Although a suspect has been detained, SFPD asks anyone who may have further details about this homicide to reach out.
Three men rob man at gunpoint, steal phone and wallet
Around 10pm on February 13th, a 30-year-old man was approached from behind by three other men near the intersection of Golden Gate Avenue and Leavenworth Street. One suspect pushed the victim to the ground, a second suspect pulled a gun, and the victim surrendered his cell phone and wallet. The suspects have not been identified.
Teen stabbed by two men at Turk & Market
At 4:30pm on February 13th, a 17-year-old man walking near the intersection of Turk and Market streets was attacked and stabbed by two men using an “unknown edged weapon,” according to SFPD. The victim's wound was not life-threatening. No suspects have not been detained.
Life-threatening stabbing, assault both occur in one morning
On February 12th, we reported on two crimes that left victims with life-threatening injuries. Around 3am, police found a 46-year-old man suffering from a life-threatening stab wound near 9th and Market streets. The victim told officers he was stabbed near 8th and Market streets.
Earlier that morning, a 24-year-old man was assaulted on the 200 block of O'Farrell Street, also suffering life-threatening injuries.
Deliveryman robbed of electronics
Just after noon on February 12th, a 45-year-old computer deliveryman was a approached by two other men near the intersection of Turk and Mason streets. The victim felt intimidated and handed over the laptop and an iPhone. Both suspects fled on foot and have not been identified.
New crime statistics
SFPD recently released statistics breaking down crimes in the Tenderloin over the first month of 2017. The data shows that Sunday was the day that saw the most aggravated assaults and theft from vehicles, while personal robberies were most likely to occur on Fridays.
Sector 5 —bounded by Geary, Ellis, Polk and Powell streets—saw the most aggravated assaults and personal thefts, while Sector 2—between Mission, Market, 6th and 3rd streets—saw the highest number of vehicle thefts.
Community meeting
Anyone interested in learning more about neighborhood crime, safety and police priorities in SFPD's Tenderloin District is encouraged to attend Captain Teresa Ewins' community meetings, held at 6pm on the last Tuesday of every month at the Tenderloin Station. This month's meeting is this coming Tuesday, February 28th.
