Carb lovers will soon have another excuse to head to SoMa. Les Gourmands, a French bakery, is opening at 280 5th St. this spring, with a menu of freshly baked viennoiserie (French-style breakfast pastries).

"Our shop is currently under construction," says founder and 5th-generation baker Sylvain Chaillout, who will run the bakery with his parents, Catherine and Serge. "It should be ready at the beginning of June."

All of the products will be based on family recipes, with local and organic ingredients. Visitors can expect croissants, brioches, chaussons aux pommes (apple turnovers), chouquettes (pastry puffs) and other baked goods, made continuously throughout the day.

Les Gourmands will be part of Folsom Street's Mosso apartment complex, which includes over 460 residential apartments and approximately 8,000 square feet of retail space. According to floor plans, it will be housed at the corner of 5th and Folsom streets, just down the block from fellow tenant Contraband Coffee, which opened in January.
