Man Dead After Early Morning Altercation In Russian Hill [Updated]Image: Google Maps

A 36-year-old man has died after an altercation on the 2500 block of Van Ness Avenue (between Filbert and Union streets) in Russian Hill earlier this morning, said SFPD.

Around 2:15am, a verbal altercation between the man and multiple suspects became physical.

The man was seriously injured and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

SFPD is now actively investigating the homicide. 

Update, 10:37am: According to NBC, police say that the victim may have been a tourist who was staying at the Da Vinci Villa hotel at 2550 Van Ness.

Update, 2:30pm: SFPD have two people in custody in connection to the incident that took place this morning, said NBC. The San Francisco Medical Examiner officer has identified the man as Matthew Bate, a 33-year-old tourist who was visiting from Australia.

The police are still looking to see if any drugs, alcohol or weapons were involved in the homicide.
