'Enchanted Land' Marks Return Of Veteran Haight St. MerchantPhoto: Camden Avery/Hoodline

Four years after shuttering Genesis Imports (1573 Haight St.) to get out of retail and set up a wholesale operation in Los Angeles, owner Abdul Noory is back in the Upper Haight.

Noory, who opened his first shop in the Haight in 1985, is a veteran of the neighborhood. His new operation, dubbed Enchanted Land, at 1641 Haight St. (formerly Dollhouse Bettie), will offer an array of imported art and handicrafts, gifts, and music, Noory said.

And while he's officially open for business today, getting signs up and putting merchandise on the shelves, he said the inventory is set to grow substantially over the coming months.

Noory initially left the retail game because he was burnt out, but after four years in Los Angeles, he said he was ready to return to the Haight and his Bay Area-based family.

"For some reason, Haight Street has some sort of magnetic thing that pulls me back in," he said.

Noory said it was good to be back, but in 32 years on the street, he's never seen so many retail vacancies.

"It would be very unfortunate to see that get worse," he said, speculating a link between the country's political climate and the willingness of shop owners to take risks.

"That does a lot of damage to the country, to people who are struggling," he said, adding that he's glad to be around "a lot of different people from different regions."
