A new Korean fusion spot is slated for the former Montella Pizzeria at 3161 24th St. (near Shotwell) in the Mission. Chef Brandon Kirksey and his partner Kristina Farino are opening Foxsister on Friday, September 27th.

Kirksey began his career at popular city restaurants, first at Jardiniere in Hayes Valley then cooking at Flour + Water and later as chef de cuisine for Slanted Door. More recently, Kirksey trained with staff at Seattle’s Korean steakhouse Girin, where he learned how to make the savory pancakes, fried chicken, bulgogi and the handmade rice cakes featured in the new menu.

Most plates are large and are meant to be shared.

“The only thing Korean about the place is the food," explained Kirksey. "Otherwise it’ll have a very punk rock vibe, something we’ve dubbed trash-glam.”

He and Farino have already worked with local artists like Apexer to bring a colorful geometric mural to the outside of the building.

The interior features a wheat-paste collage by Seattle artist Cheyenne Randall

The rest of the interior will feature gold leaf and mirror walls, string lights, bright red boots, and a glittery purple resin bar top.

In addition to new takes on Korean classics, the rest of the menu will consist of what Kirksey called “fun items with a Korean influence,” including kimchi nacho cheese dip and fries with kimchi salt.

Foxsister will also have a selection of beers and wines, and four operating slushy machines filled with soju in flavors like grapefruit, piña colada, and frosé (that’s frozen rosé).

Renovations underway at Foxsister.

A DJ booth behind the bar, with sets from rotating DJs, will add to the music-focused, said Kirksey. “I want it to be a fun, rowdy environment where friends get together and have big platters of food and big pitchers of beer."

Once open, Foxsister’s hours will be 6-10pm, Sunday through Wednesday, and 6-11pm, Thursday through Saturday. Both walk-ins and reservations will be accepted.
