It's not braised tofu, but if you're seeking a less guilty spin on familiar comfort food, Vegan Donut Gelato has you covered.

Located at 411 E 18th St. (between 5th Ave. & Park Blvd.), the new spot moves into the space formerly occupied by Fairway Park Donuts & Ice Cream. Vegan Donut Gelato goes up directly against Donut Farm, another local animal-free bakery.

According to tipster extraordinaire Al M., Donuts are priced “around $2-5 each depending on selection,” and everything in the display case is freshly baked and prepared without animal products.

Stocking familiar varieties like cake, glazed and jelly-filled, as well as pastries like bear claws and apple fritters, menu items can be washed down with organic tea or coffee.

The gelato selection is also vegan, using an almond milk base. By the end of the month, “they’ll have fourteen flavors of gelato on any given day,” Al reports.

Vegan Donut Gelato has already attracted fans thus far, with a five-star rating out of six reviews on Yelp. This is the shop's first Bay Area location; its flagship is located in Modesto.

Chrystal N., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on September 3rd, said: "I've already come here twice since they opened. The donuts are the perfect texture of soft and chewy. They're moist and not too dry. Possibly my new favorite donut store."

Yelper John G. added: “Delicious!!! Cake donuts, yeast risen donut holes, banana fritters, bear claws, cherry donuts, orange, and blueberry...with actual.blueberries inside the donut! And best of all... 100% vegan!!!”
