The holiday season is just around the corner, which means it's time to start thinking about the gifts you'll be getting for your family and friends. But instead of buying gifts this season, how about offering something handmade that will hold extra sentimental value?

If you'd like to try your hand at DIY holiday gifting this year, we've rounded up four classes at various Oakland studios that are currently being offered at discounted rates.

Head over to Slow Burn Glass Studio (2690 Union St.) to learn how to blow glass and make home accessories like stemless wine glasses, vases, and even a pilsner beer cup.

The studio was founded in 2006 by glass artist Bryan Goldberg to "create unsurpassed glass art and share the joy of glassblowing with the public." Classes are normally $160, but Groupon is currently offering them for $82 each.

Jewelry Making

Jewelry can be an expensive purchase, but you can cut the cost and add a personal touch by crafting your own pieces this holiday season. Students will get to work with Peter Ostwald at his studio, Ostwald Workshops (2443 Magnolia St.); Ostwald has more than 40 years of experience in metalwork under his belt.

The session, which is valid for six hours, will allow students to "create a simple (and elegant) ring, bracelet, or pendant, or something more complex." Groupon is offering the session for 35 percent off, at $195.

Grab a few close friends and roll into Puff Pass Paint (2607 Mandela Parkway) in Oakland, the "first ever cannabis-friendly all-inclusive art class."

Although the art studio does allow people to smoke, it does not provide cannabis—and it also doesn't require you to partake during the class. Classes for four people, originally $196, are on sale for $142.

Handmade gifts always feel more intimate, so why not try your luck at The Crucible (1260 7th St.) for its "taste of industrial arts experience?" The class incorporates a variety of glass fusing, glass casting, jewelry making and metal working while incorporating the necessary safety gear and materials.

The "Taste of Fine Arts Experience," which focuses on the first three activities listed above, is $155 (originally $300), while the "Taste of Industrial Arts Experience," focused on on metalworking, is also on sale for $155.
