Here's a look at notable crimes reported in the Tenderloin District in the two weeks since our last roundup. Unless otherwise noted, all details are drawn from SFPD's daily reports.

Suspect arrested in unprovoked attacks

On June 17th around 12:40 p.m., an SFPD officer saw San Francisco native 58-year-old Samuel Youmtoub walking on Market Street near UN Plaza and recognized him from surveillance footage taken last month of an unprovoked attack on a homeless man on McAllister and Leavenworth street.

The incident, recorded on May 24th around 3:35 p.m., involved a 38-year-old homeless man laying on the sidewalk who was allegedly kicked multiple times in the face by Youmtoub.

Youmtoub is also suspected of spontaneously attacking a 28-year-old Muni rider near 8th and Mission streets. According to Muni surveillance footage, the suspect grabbed the victim by the hair and repeatedly slammed his face into a steel handrail on the bus. The victim suffered from severe facial trauma including a broken nose. 

Youmtoub was recognized by two SFPD officers on foot beat and booked him into the San Francisco County Jail on two cases of aggravated assault, as reported by Heather Holmes of KTVU.

Man robbed in six-on-one assault

A 20-year-old man was walking down Market Street near Cyril Magnin around 11:50 p.m. on June 16th when six men said to be in their twenties began talking with him. One suspect with his hand in his pocket demanded the victim hand over his property.

The victim punched the first suspect in an effort to resist, but the other five men jumped in and attacked him. The victim was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening head injuries and lost his cell phone in the attack. No arrests have been made.

Hotel tenant loses phone in three-on-one attack

Just before 8:00 a.m. on June 17th, a 37-year-old man was standing outside of his hotel near the corner of Eddy and Larkin streets when a man said to be in his twenties grabbed him and demanded he hand over his phone.

The suspect and another man grabbed the victim from behind and hit him in the head until he fell to the ground. A woman driving a dark colored sedan, said to be in her twenties, kicked the victim multiple times before all three suspects fled. The victim lost his phone and refused medical treatment. 

Two men attacked by groups of teens

Around 10:00 p.m. on June 14th, a 28-year-old man was attacked and robbed by two men said to be 19 years old near the intersection of Turk and Market streets.

Only 15 minutes prior and two blocks northeast, a group of three men said to be 18 to 19 years old attacked and robbed a 36-year-old man near the intersection of Market and Ellis streets.

Both victims were robbed of their phones and wallets. There is no evidence the crimes are related, and no arrests have been made.

Wheelchair attack

Around 10:35 p.m. on June 12th, a wheelchair-bound man said to be in his sixties approached a 68-year-old man, also in a wheelchair, from behind and attacked him with a metal pipe. The victim wheeled himself to safety and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect hasn’t been identified. 

Five men robbed at gunpoint

At 6:00 p.m. on June 10th, five men aged 22, 28, 31, 49, and 26 years old were robbed at gunpoint on the corner of McAllister and Market streets. A 21-year-old man held the five victims at gunpoint while a 17-year-old man searched them for items to steal. Both suspects were arrested and the gun was confiscated. 

Man robbed by suspect seeking Muni fare

Around 4:06 a.m. on June 10th, a man said to be in his twenties asked a 28-year-old man to help him buy a bus pass near the intersection of 7th and Market streets. The suspect then punched the victim, threatened him with a knife, and stole his necklace and hat before fleeing west on Market. 

Three-on-two robbery at gunpoint 

Two men aged 44 and 34 years old were near the intersection of Market and McAllister around 1:00 a.m. on June 9th when they were approached by three men who pointed a gun at them and demanded they hand over their money, cellphones, and a ring.

One of the suspects pistol-whipped the older victim before robbing them. All of the suspects fled into an awaiting vehicle and have not been identified. 

Midday Polk Street robbery at gunpoint

Around 2:00 p.m. on June 7th, a 49-year-old man was attacked by three suspects on the 900 block of Polk Street. The three male suspects, said to be in their twenties, robbed the victim of his money and have not been arrested. 

Witness reports stabbing after argument

Just before 3:00 a.m. on June 7th, a 35-year-old man and a 25-year-old man were seen arguing by a witness on the 1100 block of Market Street (near McAllister). 

According to the witness, the younger man took a fighting stance, pulled out a knife, and swung at the victim numerous times, stabbing the older man in the torso. The suspect fled the scene and the victim was treated for a stab wound to his abdomen.

Muni passengers robbed in two separate assaults

A 62-year-old man was sitting in his bus on the 900 block of Market Street (near 5th) around 8:55 a.m. on June 6th when two men said to be in their forties approached him. One suspect punched the man in the face and stole the man’s wallet, including his drivers license and credit cards, while the second suspect held the victim down. The victim was treated for non-life-threatening head injuries.

A 72-year-old man was riding the 38-Geary bus through the Tenderloin around 1:38 p.m. on June 4th when a man said to be in his forties punched him in the face and stole his sunglasses.

This victim suffered a scratch under his eye. No suspect have been unidentified in either attack.
