A Clayton County police officer fatally shot a sexual assault suspect who reportedly fired at them first at a gas station yesterday morning. The confrontation stemmed from an overnight sexual assault investigation, with officers spotting the suspect's car during their patrol.

Chief Kevin Roberts of the Clayton County Police detailed to FOX 5 that the officers were circulating the area around 11 a.m. when they noticed the suspect's vehicle driving by. Following the car to a Valero gas station on the 5300 block of Riverdale Road, they attempted to apprehend the suspect who pulled out a weapon and began to shoot, leading to an officer discharging their firearm and killing him.

The shootout, witnessed by the heavy police presence, prompted officials to cordon off the street between Forest Parkway and Norman Drive. According to 11Alive, evidence markers dotted the site and a body could be seen lying on the ground as investigators worked at the scene.

"Produced a handgun and began firing upon officers," were the words used by Roberts while speaking to 11Alive when describing the suspect's action. In response, the officer involved fired back 'a large number' of shots, ultimately resulting in the suspect's death. Following the shooting, the officer has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation, a standard procedure under such circumstances. At this time, the police have not released the identity of the suspect.

Reassuring the public, Roberts stated that the area is now secure, indicating there is no further threat. Any individuals with information pertaining to the incident have been urged to contact the Clayton County Police Department as the investigation is still ongoing.
