Boston Man Charged with Multiple Firearms Offenses After Traffic Stop in DorchesterSource: Boston Police Department

Early Thursday morning, Boston police arrested a Dorchester man during a routine traffic stop for possessing a firearm. James Perry Jr., 28, was pulled over for speeding along Columbia Road and was subsequently charged with multiple firearms offenses, according to the Boston Police Department.

The incident kicked off around 2:15 AM when officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) noticed a vehicle racing before making a sudden turn onto Hamilton Street. Police attempted to pull over the car, which slowed down and then was stopped. Upon approaching the car, officers asked for Perry Jr.'s driver’s license and vehicle registration, only to discover a collection of empty alcohol bottles inside, including one in the front cup holder. Perry Jr. was also unable to present a vehicle registration, as detailed by Boston Police Department.

The vehicle operator's license turned out to be expired. When officers asked him to exit the vehicle, Perry Jr. clutched a backpack tightly between his legs and resisted leaving the car. Eventually, officers assisted him out, but he fought back, seizing his backpack and dashing away. A chase on foot followed, with officers calling for backup to corner Perry Jr., who continued to struggle even as police closed in to cuff him.

Officers ultimately managed to secure Perry Jr. and during the scuffle found a Springfield XD-9 handgun in his backpack. The firearm was noted to be loaded with one round in chamber and eleven more in the magazine—a high-capacity one designed to hold thirteen rounds. Perry Jr. is now facing charges that include unlawful possession of a firearm, ammunition, a large capacity feeding device, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest. His arraignment is set in Dorchester District Court, according to a statement by the Boston Police Department.
