Broward County Deputy Strikes, Kills Pedestrian in Pompano Beach Early Morning CollisionSource: Google Street View

Early Saturday morning, in a tragic collision, a Broward County Sheriff's deputy struck and killed a pedestrian in Pompano Beach, officials reported. The victim, identified as 28-year-old Jamil Moreland of Fort Lauderdale, died at the scene following the impact which occurred just after 5:30 a.m. near the 1500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard, according to CBS News Miami.

The sequence of events unfolded while deputy Wyatt Jennesse, 24, was en route to a lewd and lascivious report near North Powerline Road. Jennesse, who was driving in the left-thru lane, had just passed the intersection of Northwest 15th Avenue when he inadvertently struck Moreland, who was "laying or in a crouched position" in the street. The deputy immediately came to a controlled stop and was quick to report the incident, as BocaNewsNow.com detailed.

In a statement obtained by BocaNewsNow.com, investigators later confirmed that Moreland, the deceased pedestrian, was indeed the individual connected to the initial service call the deputy was responding to. BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived on scene shortly after the crash. No other injuries have been noted in relation to the unfortunate occurrence.

While the investigation is still ongoing, authorities have indicated that factors such as driver impairment, excessive speed, and mechanical malfunction do not appear to have played a role in the deadly incident.
