Minneapolis Honors Late Entrepreneur Sammy McDowell, Community Engages in Civic Programs and Art InitiativesSource: City of Minneapolis

Minneapolis is mourning the loss of a beloved local entrepreneur, Sammy McDowell, owner of Sammy's Avenue Eatery, who was cherished for his community-centric values and substantial business acumen. Council Member Jeremiah Ellison recounted his own connection to McDowell, "I met Sammy when I was a young artist, my studio just across the street from Sammy's Avenue Eatery. His warmth was so consistent, it felt permanent." Ellison extended an invitation for locals to partake in the commemorations planned, including a visitation and homegoing service at Shiloh Temple International Ministries on May 8 and 9, according to the City of Minneapolis.

The Minneapolis community is also invited to engage in a variety of events and programs. A highlight includes the Behavioral Crisis Responders (BCR) ride-along, which Ellison took part in on April 18, where he saw first-hand the critical services provided to residents in crisis, "free of charge for Minneapolis residents."

Upcoming community-building opportunities were announced, such as a community planting event with Project Sweetie Pie and Northside Safety NET set for the end of May. Alongside, Nonviolent Peaceforce is gearing up for a workshop series on de-escalation in early May. Participants can look forward to topics like the OODA Loop and Upstander Intervention at The Hub for Nonviolence and Safety.

The correspondence stressed the importance of civic programs and highlighted Representative Ilhan Omar's community project funding round application period which wraps up on May 1. Platforms for assistance in various areas, including career readiness, tenant protection, and legal representation, were also illuminated. Ellison's office emphasized the availability of these programs and suggested ways for constituents to connect with the resources, from Project for Pride in Living initiatives to Attorney General Keith Ellison's office.

Art enthusiasts were intrigued to learn of a call to artists in conjunction with the North Commons Park Improvements Project. Potential applicants are prompted to attend an optional information meeting on April 19th or complete submissions by May 3 for consideration in the various public art opportunities, as per the city's notification.
