Get ready to hit the rails, Chicago and Twin Cities travelers. Amtrak has announced the launch of its new "Borealis" line, slated to start shuttling passengers between Chicago and the Twin Cities come May 21. The additional service will offer one train going each way, effectively doubling the number of connections between those bustling metros.

The timing is prime for commuters and tourists alike. The westbound train is set to leave Chicago at 11:05 a.m., rolling into St. Paul around 6:29 p.m., as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. Meanwhile, those looking to journey east will find the St. Paul departure scheduled for 11:50 a.m., which will have them arriving in Chicago at a convenient 7:14 p.m.

The "Borealis" isn’t going it alone; funding for this expansion has been pooled from the states the train will pass through, as well as the Federal Railroad Administration’s Corridor Identification Program. This partnership was highlighted by Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman, who said, “We are proud to collaborate with neighboring states and our federal partners to offer more Amtrak service in the Midwest,” according to a news release obtained by WTTW News.

What’s more, travelers can score seats at wallet-friendly prices starting at $41 each way. The trains are not just about getting you from point A to point B—passengers will also to be able to enjoy both coach and business class, topped off with the convenience of a cafe car. With the new "Borealis" service overlapping existing routes like Hiawatha and Empire Builder, commuters have now options aplenty for Midwest travel.
