Eden Prairie K-9 Veteran Riggs Remembered for Dedication and Impact on CommunitySource: Facebook / Eden Prairie Police Department

The Eden Prairie Police Department announced last week the passing of one of its most respected K-9 veterans, Riggs. At 11 years old, the German Shepherd who served the EPPD from 2014 until his retirement in 2019, crossed the rainbow bridge.

Riggs, who hailed from Slovakia and joined the force at 15 months, left a mark with his dedicated service which included multiple successful tracks and searches. His handler, Officer Scott Mittelstadt, who has since been promoted to Sergeant, shared a special bond with Riggs throughout his years of service — and into his retirement where the two remained inseparable.

The EPPD, in conjunction with heartfelt sentiments from the Mittelstadt family, recalls Riggs' "thorough enjoyment" in going to work each day, a statement found on the department's official blog. His impact extended beyond operational duties; Riggs was also a star at public demonstrations, leaving a lasting impression on both colleagues and community members.

In his golden years, the four-legged officer spent much of his time engaged in leisurely walks and spirited ball games with friends and family. The Mittelstadt household, having shared a home with Riggs after his departure from active duty, commemorates his loyalty and camaraderie both on and off the field. According to EPPD's tribute, he "will be greatly missed by his immediate family and extended Police Department family."
