Electric Scooter Rider Fatality Marks San Jose’s 15th Traffic-Related Death of the YearSource: Google Street View

Tragedy struck the streets of San Jose as a man riding an electric scooter clashed with fate and lost his life in a two-vehicle pile-up. The San Jose Police Department reported the incident, which unfolded on South 10th Street and Elizabeth Street, marking the city's 15th traffic-related death this year. The collision occurred on April 30, tossing the scooter rider into a precarious fight for survival.

The ill-fated rider, commanding a Ninebot electric scooter, was attempting to navigate the southbound lane on the northbound side when he collided with a Tesla Model Y after the latter had turned onto the street, according to the San Jose Police Department. Moments later, a Chevy Cobalt, operated by a woman, compounded the tragedy by running into the man as he lay in the street. The drivers of both cars stayed on the scene, assisting with the probe that followed this harrowing event.

The aftermath of the crash left the scooter rider severely injured, and despite being rushed to the hospital with life-threatening wounds, his struggle ended a few days later. On May 2, the authorities were notified that the scooter rider had succumbed to his injuries.

Both motorists involved in the incident were committed to the inquiry, providing their full cooperation. The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office is tasked with releasing the identity of the deceased once the necessary confirmations and notifications have been completed. In the interim, law enforcement officials have reached out to the community, issuing a call to action for any witnesses or those with knowledge about the accident to step forward, offering up the possibility of a cash reward via the Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers Program for information leading to an arrest.

The San Jose community is now reflecting on the increasing count of road fatalities, with this incident being the 15th of its kind this year alone. As the investigation continues, anyone with insight into this fatal collision is encouraged to contact Detective Leslie at the Traffic Investigations Unit by emailing [email protected] or by calling 408-277-4654.
